About

Welcome to the return of Women's Minor League Basketball, the Women's Southwest Basketball League. The league that has returned to the Lone Star State after a long hiatus. The league started with a vision by Mr Charles Johnson to build a platform for Women's minor league basketball in smaller to mid-range markets that would give fans the experience to watch great women's basketball talent that is homegrown and affordable. The WNBA's Houston Comets developed the league's first dynasty. The WSBL would give great entertainment and a great fan base to start the league.
The first franchises of the league that started in May of 2000 were the Houston Flames, the Bryan College Station Stallions, the Austin Cyclones, the San Antonio Bombers, Brenham Glory, and the Fort Hood All-Stars on May 7, 2000. History was made as the Houston Flames and the Brenham Glory played the league's first-ever game. The game featured former Houston Rockets great, NBA Hall of Famer, the late Robert Reid, coaching the Flames against rising head coach Michael Lewis, who coached the Glory. Glory forward Thomasina Gaston scored the league's first basket, and Glory center Sirena Autman had the league's first double-double as the Glory defeated the Flames 92-91 before a sold-out crowd at the Brenham ISD Center
The league would expand as the Seguin Spirit, which would move to San Antonio. The Houston Jaguars, Amarillo Freedom, Houston Flames, and San Marcos Slam would play out the league, which would stop play in 2006
Now, almost 20 years after the dormancy of the brand. Michael Lewis was given permission to restart the league. And it will have the small-town minor league market, which will upgrade into teams from the same areas in the Southeast Texas region, and develop a North Texas region where teams from the North Texas area will participate, with the goal for the following
* Low Franchise Fees for all Teams
* Building a Fan Base
* Playing Teams within their Conference
* Certified TSOA Officials Within Their Market
* A 5K Lone Star WSBL Championship Cup
The WSBL will start with its first season with a North Conference and a South Conference series of cluster games at selected sites in their region in June 2026
An announcement on potential expansion sites will commence in November of 2025
